There are a lot of books out there and the choice keeps on growing and growing. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to read all the books out there. I wish I could, but I have to make some choices.
These are some series or books I’m not going to pick up and read. Each has different reasons behind them, but mostly they don’t interest me anymore at this point in my life. This could off course change towards the future, but for now they’re on my ‘not-to-read’ list.
The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld
This series always had mixed reviews. Some loved it, others hated it and found it a bit boring at times. I thought, and still think, the concept is quite interesting. But at the time this book popped up on my reading radar, there were so many other Dystopian books out there (think of The Hunger Games, Divergent…) that were a bit more interesting to me, so I let this one slide.
Now being a bit older and falling out of love with this particular genre, this book doesn’t sound that appealing to me anymore. I’ve had my share of dystopian YA stories where everything turns around teenagers. Even the concept of Uglies being turned into Pretties to advance in society gets me feeling a bit strange, so this is a pass for me.
The Fallen Series by Lauren Kate
This was huge when it first came out. Surfing on the Twilight-Hype, this give the entire YA-world a new heroine to follow and to feel with. At first glance I thought it was something for me, but after only one chapter I put it down, because it was a bit too gloomy and dark. I already read so many novels with the same premise and I wanted a change.
Now almost 8 years lates, being that much older, this just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. At all. Even the movie flopped and didn’t even get a release. I also heard that these were for the younger YA’s, feeling a bit too immature for most readers. I’m sure that these have their public, but unfortunately I’m not one of them.
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
Being a huge Fantasy fan, it’s a really a shame I didn’t pick this book up yes, this series. But honestly, it’s because it doesn’t really appeal to me. With Eragon – the movie already giving me a first taste of the story, I just don’t really know what to think of it. I know it’s hard to turn a big fantasy book into one full-length movie, but I thought the story in the movie wasn’t constructed really well.
Unfortunately, because this really puts me off reading this book and unfortunately, now it even made its way on my not-to-read list. With the time that passes, me wanting to reading this book or need to reading this book, diminishes every time and I don’t think I will ever pick this one up.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
Now here I suspect I will hear gasp from over the entire internet. Yes, I haven’t read any of Rick Riordan’s book and I’m not going to either. It’s not because the story doesn’t talk to me at all, neither because of his writing style (that I heard was really good), but just because there are already so many books out there, that I don’t want to start this huge series and the follow-ups. I’m not sure i’m going to be able to finish it, so I prefer to stay away.
I got a taste from this story and the characters from the movies. While I did enjoy them, even though apparently they aren’t really faithful to the book, the story was fun to know, but didn’t really speak to me. It’s a series my sister loved and enjoyed, so I think I’m getting a bit too old for this.
The Host Series by Stephenie Meyer
When I was sixteen, I devoured the Twilight Series. It was a huge part of my life and the main reason I felt back in love with reading. For this alone, I’ll be forever grateful to Twilight and Stephenie Meyer. But I’m not sure I will ever read that series ever again. Her writing style just isn’t what I want to reading right now.
In that point of view, her latest series and her first next to the Twilight series, just doesn’t appeal to me. I haven’t seen the movie yet and maybe that’ll change my point of view. But I just didn’t connect with the story and her writing style by reading the first chapter. I’m sure it’s a great book, but it’s just not for me.
