Cover Reveal – Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer keeps on coming out with amazing new books and after her graphic novel set in the world of the Lunar Chronicles, we now get an entire new world with superheroes and villains. So exciting!

There’s even a short interview with Marissa Meyer on the LA Times, so definitely check that out to see her thoughts on this new book and what else she has in store for us. But first lets enjoy this beautiful cover.

Renegades_01

by Marissa Meyer

It really give me a Blade Runner and The Incredibles vibe. A futuristic world, divided, centered around technology and the city. The duality between the characters and the way the cover is divided in two, makes this cover really interesting and already gives us, next to the storyline off course, an idea of what the book will be about. The colours, the details of the drawing of the city gives us an idea of how important the setting will be as well. It gives me a feeling of those classic sci-fi cop movies.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this book. Marissa Meyer is great at sketching a modern, sci-fi world (just read the Lunar Chronicles) and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do with superheroes and villains involved. Romeo & Juliet with superheroes. This can’t be anything but great.

Let me know what you think in the comments below. Will you be picking up this book?

Book Review – Freaks’ Squeele vol. 1 & 2

‘À la Faculté des Études Académiques des Héros, Chance, Xiong Mao et Ombre entament leur cursus. Ces trois nouveaux étudiants vont découvrir les joies de la vie universitaire, la concurrence sans pitié entre étudiants, les professeurs sadiques, le stress des examens et bien plus encore… Une université pour apprendre à gérer son image et obtenir un permis de super-héros : il fallait y penser.’ (Goodreads) (2x 140 pages, 2009, Ankama)

I found this little gem rather by accident. I was walking in my favorite Fnac-shop in Lille (Fr.) and I was looking for another book to read and I saw a little kid reading this in a corner. I found the drawings so crazy but still so beautiful, I decided to buy the first one just to see what I thought of it. And I loved it so much. The next time I was in Lille, I basically ran to the store to buy the second book and now I’m desperately waiting to have some more cash to buy the rest of the series.

Freaks Squeele_01

It is, I have to say, quite crazy. This graphic novel tells the story of three students who start at a university to become superheroes and they’re basically failing and are at the bottom of the list. They have all these crazy school assignments that they have to try to get done and there are ups and downs, and let’s just say some they finish and others just get out of control.

Freaks_Squeele03

The three main characters are so well rounded and they get this entire arc in both comics, which is so nice to see, especially in such short formats as the graphic novel. I’m sure they grow even more in the next volumes. It’s just so great to see these characters’ evolution and to see them change and grow. They are so different and just grew more and more in my heart because of their difference, but mostly because of their friendship. They stick together no matter what falls on their path.

Freaks Squeele_04

I preferred the second volume a bit more, just because with the first volume I was trying to understand the world and to get to know the characters, which took some time at first, but didn’t take away from my enjoyment of it. Definitely worth picking it up and I’m so sad it doesn’t have the success that it deserves. (It already stopped being printed in Dutch, bummer)

Freaks Squeele_05

The setting does seem a bit like any other story, finding your way in school, having magical abilities… They way it’s drawn, the way the story is told, the way they use colour is just so unique and I can’t wait to continue picking this one up. They already made so much more series set in this world that I can’t wait to see what else is in store for them. With some new characters in play, craziness is just around the corner.

3,5 – 4 out of 5 stars.

Book Review – Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

by Elizabeth Wein

by Elizabeth Wein

I have two weeks. You’ll shoot me at the end no matter what I do. That’s what you do to enemy agents. It’s what we do to enemy agents. But I look at all the dark and twisted roads ahead and cooperation is the easy way out. Possibly the only way out for a girl caught red-handed doing dirty work like mine – and I will do anything, anything to avoid SS-Hauptsturmführer von Linden interrogating me again. He has said that I can have as much paper as I need. All I have to do is cough up everything I can remember about the British War Effort. And I’m going to. But the story of how I came to be here starts with my friend Maddie. She is the pilot who flew me into France – an Allied Invasion of Two. We are a sensational team.’ (Goodreads) (441 pages, 6th february 2012, Egmont Press)

I loved this book so much. I already heard so many great things about it from other bloggers and booktubers, but I just wanted to see for myself how good this book actually is. And I must say I was happily surprised.

CNV_02

It was a bit strange at first of how the book was constructed. Of how the story was divided in two. First from one perspective and then we got the same exact story or period of time, from her friend’s perspective. But after a while I got used to it and enjoyed it immensely. I thought we would go between the characters, but the way she told the story made so much more sense at the end. Because it’s at that point we really understand what happened and what impact it will have or had on their friendship.

First we get the story from Maddie’s point of view. She is, at first glance, the stronger  of the two. She flies and flies and just wants to fly, taking every opportunity to go into the skies and sometimes even at her own peril. But it’s there that she meets Julie, and while she thinks (no spoilers) that some events are her fault, after getting all the information, you really see that she cares so deeply for Julie. This friendship is the main premise of the story and for this reason alone it’s great.

CNV_03

Then we have Julie. She is quieter, a small girl with a quick wit. At first I didn’t really like her honestly, because I felt like we didn’t really have all the information or we didn’t get that much from her character and reasons. This makes sense though because she is a secret agent and she learns not to divulge information. But I really came to care for her at the end of the book, when everything felt into place. You see that, although they both think they are not strong, they care deeply for each other and their friendship makes them both better persons.

That was what made this book so great. Next to the brilliant characters and the history (it really felt like the second World War), it’s the way Elizabeth Wein told the story. All the information we got from Maddie’s story fit perfectly with Julie’s story and so much made sense after reading everything. Reading it a second time, I think, will give so much more out of it because you now know how it’ll end and, for me personally, it will be great to see how it all blends together.

CNV_04.jpg

This is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life. I read it in one setting and I just couldn’t put it down. It stuck to me for months afterwards. Even now, writing my review of it (I think) a year later, it just all comes back and I feel the tears on my cheeks. I can perfectly remember how I felt reading this book. I can see where I was when reading this book. It took me this long writing a review about it, because I wanted to give it the best one possible and I just couldn’t do it so soon after reading it. Needless to say that this book left an impact and I immediately gave to everyone in my family to read it. (My sister did, and she enjoyed it as well.)

5 out of 5 stars! A perfect blend of female friendship, history and a thriller. There are elements for everyone. Give it a go and let me know what you think of it!

BBL. Quickie (#2) – Shatter Me Series

Shatter Me is going to continue on… and on…

Shatter_01So this news dropped yesterday : Tahereh Mafi is releasing 3 more books in the Shatter Me series. Continuing on from where she left of with Ignite Me, we see, as they put it: ‘it will follow the new Supreme Commander as she attempts to lead Sector 45 with Warner at her side. But when tragedy strikes, Juliette will be tested, leading her to see if she can use her ability (to kill with a single touch) after all.’ Read all about it right here.

When this series ended my heart broke, because I loved the characters, the stories, the writing, the world Tahereh Mafi build… I am so glad she’s picking this back up, because honestly… when finishing the first trilogy, you can’t stop but wondering what happens after. Their story wasn’t finished at all. So I’m glad to see we’ll be able to see what Julliette and Warner will have to deal with after and how their epic adventure continues.

Shatter_03

Plus the title: Restore Me… It’s in line with the others and still gives us nothing to go on, but so much to wonder about. I… Can’t… Wait… March 6th, 2018 is still so far away. Click on the name to add it to your Goodreads!

Cover Reveal – The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

tLoT_01

This new novel by Leigh Bardugo finally has a cover! And it’s beautiful. Read all about it here with some pieces of an interview with Leigh Bardugo about how they got to this cover. With the embroidery and the colour combination, it gives us a taste of how this book will be. It’s based on myths and folklore that live in the Grisha world. With the different emblems (the fox, the thorns, the bird/fenix maybe?) it gives us an idea of the subjects of the different stories. And it’s going to be dark. The black background, the blue thorns and the bright orange-brown figures on the cover show us that these stories will be interesting, dark and full of magic.

This collection of short novels set in the Grisha World is just another reason for me, and for all of her fans to step back into this world. We’ll get to read about different tales that live there and that are mentioned in her other series. The combination of the 6 tales, with three brand-new ones, will be a perfect blend of danger, magic and folklore.

tLoT_03

It’s always fun to get these glimpses in the world our favourite characters live in. I think of the Tales of Egg and Dunk by George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones), The Hobbit or The Unfinished Tales by J.R.R. Tolkien and even Sarah J. Maas is writing some more stories in the world of Throne of Glass.

It’s a format that is more easily used in Fantasy worlds and it’s a trend that most writers continue to use to go back to the world they created and give the fans more stories in that specific world. Is it to get us to buy more books and in such way support the publishing world, definitely yes. Is it something I easily do and buy? Off course, just to get more stories and an extra chance to dive back into the world I felt in love with. But my opinion is that as long as the stories remain interesting, I’ll throw my money any way the publishing world wants.

What do you think? Will you be picking this up? Let me know in the comments below.

BBL. Quickie – Title Reveal Throne of Glass #6

We’ve got a title… We’ve got a title…

tog_10We’ve got a title and I’m freaking out. Tower of Dawn… It seems so cool and interesting and I can’t wait. This series has been my part of my life for the past 5-6 years and although each book takes me closer to the end, I can’t wait to see how Sarah J. Maas will wrap it all up.

Regardless of the ups and downs this series took, it’s one I still keep picking up and the only series I’ve reread (entirely) with each book that came out. So I have 6 books (5 + the prequels) to reread before the fifth of september.

And now we have to wait to see the cover… This wait will be painful.

Book Review – Winter by Marissa Meyer

Winter

The Lunar Chronicls #4

‘Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?’ (Goodreads) (823 pages, November 10th 2015, Feiwel & Friends)

This was one hell of a book. There aren’t much books or series, where the last installment is good and really gives us a proper ending to a story. This one does. The entire story you feel we’re going towards an end. All the storylines converge and they all work together to defeat Levana. We read the chapters from all their different point of views, but it never gets jumbled up. They are all so specific and different. Marrisa Meyer did a wonderful job in this and in getting us excited to see how they’re going to end their story.

Winter_01

We finally get to meet Winter. And she became one of my favourite characters and a real interesting one she is. She has been the most interesting one to discover and to get to know. The way she sees what her powers are like and how it affects her, is one gripping story. Also the decisions she makes are so mature for her age and humanlike. The relationships she builds are built on truth and kindness, and that’s so different from what we’re used to from their world.

Winter_04

The world building is out of this world (^^) and we get to see so much more about where Winter grew up and what their world turned out to be. Cinder finally gets there as well and sets foot on different parts of her world and what she sees and gets to know about their history breaks her heart. We see her taking her responsibilities and she grows in her role. Her decision at the end, broke my heart because it was such a beautiful one and a grown-up one and it felt like the most perfect ending of all.

Winter_02

Cress grows a lot as well. Finding her way and what she wants to do later. Her relationship evolves in a beautiful way. One character that actually grew a lot on me, was Scarlet. I was never a big fan of hers, but here she shows her strength and the way she handles some situations was just so admiring. Never accepting defeat and always going further and supporting everyone in her life.

This series has been one of my favourites and Marrisa Meyers writing has taken me to some wonderful places and literally out of this world. 4,5 out of 5 stars. A perfect ending to a beautiful series. I can’t wait to read Stars Above.

To TBR or not To TBR

That is the question.

I follow some Book Bloggers/Book Vloggers on Youtube (Like Perusetopia, Abookutopia and others…) and each month they do their wrapup of the books they’ve read and off course they’re TBR (To-Be-Read) pile of all the books they plan on reading that month. Now comes my question: do you do this as well? Make a list or a pile of the books you plan on reading?

IMG_5429

I did try to do this a few times and each time I failed completely. I don’t remember one time where I stuck to it and succeeded in either finishing it or at least read some of the books. Why did I try it?

  1. I just wanted to know if I could stick to it. I just wanted to try something new and see if I could make it. (Bullet journal, yes. TBR-pile, unfortunately no.)
  2. I love making lists. Love just love. I could go on and on making lists. I have an entire notebook with different lists: kitchen tools I still need, places I want to visit, books I need to read, movies and series I have to watch…
  3. I like giving myself goals and following them. It helps me to plan my days and the future and to keep an eye on what I want to do in my life.
  4. I love to read. Taking the time to think about what I want to read first is just a way to get myself in this world. It gives me another approach to one of my biggest passions and it gets me excited for the month and the different books to come.

There are other reasons why TBR-piles are amazing, but unfortunately, there are more reasons why it’s really hard for me.

  1. I’m an emotional reader. I’m a moody reader. In the winter I’ll grab a fantasy book, while in the summer you’ll see me reading chick lits. But it’s also depending of my personal mood. If I’m happy I’ll be reading more fantasy and character driven stories. When I’m sad, I want to read a lighter story, for example a chick lit or a young adult novel.
This is something I can’t foresee. There are moments where I can easily say: it’s going to be nice weather, so I’ll grab this book. But how I feel changes and when I’m not in the mood for a certain genre, I won’t enjoy that book and more easily put it aside.
  2. Goals are great, but life sometimes can get in the way. There are always things that come between me and my planning. Things that you couldn’t foresee and can’t ignore and that make you get behind on your schedule and your TBR. I like to get to my goal and succeed, so this is another important part for me. I hate failing my goals and reading under pressure isn’t fun. It takes away from the pleasure of it.
  3. And sometimes time is just your worst enemy as well. I’m usually a slow reader, but some books I can devour in a really quick tempo. It all depends on my mood and on the book itself as well. Just yesterday I read 250 pages of a High Fantasy book in just around 1,5 – 2 hours.

I could go on and on about this, but I’m not going to. This is something I’ve been struggling with and going back to several times over the past few years. And maybe I’ll go back to it when I’ve got my life more under control. But for the moment, I barely finish 1 book a month, so it’s not really interesting for me to have a TBR pile each month.

What are your thoughts about this topic? Do you make a TBR-pile or wrap-up each month? Let me know!

Book Review – Crooked Kingdom

Crooked_01

by Leigh Bardugo

‘The hotly-anticipated sequel to the Carnegie Medal 2017 nominated SIX OF CROWS, this is GAME OF THRONES meets OCEAN’S ELEVEN in a fantasy epic from the number 1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Leigh Bardugo.

Welcome to the world of the Grisha.

After pulling off a seemingly impossible heist in the notorious Ice Court, criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker feels unstoppable. But life is about to take a dangerous turn – and with friends who are among the deadliest outcasts in Ketterdam city, Kaz is going to need more than luck to survive in this unforgiving underworld.’ (Goodreads) (536 pages, September 27th 2016, Orion Children’s Books)

I am so glad I waited until both these books were out before starting them, because I would have honestly died waiting for this second book. I fell in love with the first one, with the characters and the world. Leigh Bardugo is just a marvelous writer. She tore my heart out with her story and her words and now I’m desperately trying to find another book to help me out of this reading slump I’m in since reading this book. None compares for the moment.

This book was crazy. After a heist-story in the first book, we get to see it again but in their own town. And the stakes are even higher. Kaz is getting more extreme with every action, trying to find a way to fix things. They don’t know who to trust. They don’t know where to go. They went into hiding and trying to find a way to get Inej back. There is all this crazy stuff happening. And they are just trying to survive and trying to take down all those around them.

Crooked_10.jpg

This is another book where I just couldn’t put it down. After every event, something else happened. We get to know a lot more about the background of different characters. This made me care even more for Inej, Kaz, Wylan and the others. And one heartbreaking event. Man, Leigh, my heart broke over and over again. I can totally understand it in the sense of the book and story, but when I don’t think rationally, I mean, No. No. No! If you have read this book, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Crooked_02

This has ups and downs, beautifull characters and a nice crafted story arc. And even though the story is and feels finished, I want more. I want to know what happens afterwards with our favourite characters. What are they doing now? Where are they going? Will they stay in Ketterdam or are they going to sail the world? So many questions and if Leigh Bardugo would ever write some short stories about them, I wouldn’t mind it at all.

4,5 out of 5 stars!! If only this story was a little longer. I want to know what happens after. I can’t wait to read the other stories she’s going to put out in this interesting world or in any other world she will create.

Book Review – Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

SixofCrows_01

by Leigh Bardugo

‘Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:

Break into the notorious Ice Court (a military stronghold that has never been breached)

Retrieve a hostage (who could unleash magical havoc on the world)

Survive long enough to collect his reward (and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.’ (Goodreads) (462 pages, September 29th 2014, Henry Holt and Company)

This was the most surprising book I’ve read the last few months. I already loved the Grisha trilogy and especially the blend of magic with the Russian culture on which the world is based. But here Leigh Bardugo takes it to the next level. She introduces all new characters and puts them in a world we already know and love. The familiarity is there, which makes it easier to connect with the new characters. It was fun to read that the characters from the Grisha trilogy are mentioned and are now a tale in their part of the world. Stories travel and this helped to see the entire world Leigh Bardugo created as one whole.

SixofCrows_02

As for the new characters, each single one is different, is interesting and had their own back story. It didn’t feel overwhelming to get to know all their different identities and their quirks. You could easily tell from whose point of view you were reading, from the way Leigh Bardugo wrote. Each character had a specific style and you could feel his or her personality through the words on the page. This is written from the point of view of all the different characters. She didn’t focus on one character, but gave us a glimpse of the thoughts of all of them which helped to understand the story and the reasoning behind each decision and step they took.

Another thing that was really interesting was that this is a group of misfits, of thiefs and others, and each of them had their strengths and weaknesses. They each add their values and their strengths to the group, and though Kaz definitely is the leader, you feel that they all shift and turn and want the group to succeed. In the middle of the book, it’s not a job like any other, but a test to see how far they’re willing to go and how far they can go.

SixofCrows_03

It’s beautifully written. The characters jump of the page and are vibrant. The depth of their characters are shown with every step they take, every decision they make. It’s a story that doesn’t let go and with every turn of the page something else happens, something crazy, and just when you were about to stop, you’re sucked right back into it.

If you’re a fan of the Grisha trilogy, then this is the book for you. But also when you’re a fan of a good heist story, an adventure story then give this book a try. You don’t have to read the Grisha trilogy first. You don’t need it at all to understand the world or the characters or the story. There are little nods here and there and which are fun to read if you have read the trilogy first, but it won’t take away from the pleasure of reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars!! I had to start Crooked Kingdom immediately after. Review of that one coming soon.
